DoH Information Prescriptions pilot - mihealth at the Royal Marsden Hospital

mihealth is currently being piloted at the Royal Marsden Hospital as part of the National DoH Information Prescriptions pilot for breast, lung, prostate and ovarian cancer.

From 2008, information prescriptions will be given to everyone with a long-term condition or social care need, in consultation with a health or social care professional. Information prescriptions will guide people to relevant and reliable sources of information to allow them to feel more in control and better able to manage their condition and maintain their independence.

To ensure the successful design and delivery of information prescriptions nationally, the DoH have recruited 20 sites to test and provide evidence of their effectiveness and their impact on the public, professionals and organisations. | Read more

Northern pilots - Newcastle and Carlisle NHS

mihealth was piloted with 30+ NHS breast cancer patients in Newcastle at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Carlisle at Cumberland Infirmary with Clive Griffith, Clinical Lead for Breast Cancer and Knowledge Management.

A generic care pathway for breast cancer was created using Cancerbackup information  structured around the Cancer Services Collaborative breast pathway and tailored to support local NHS and patient needs.

This collaborative approach to the provision of patient information provides a model for the development of a network wide approach to the delivery of high quality, personalised, patient information and will pave the way forward for further roll out of the system to all tumour groups.

Liverpool NHS pilots

The first of a series of pilots was carried out with breast cancer patients at the Linda McCartney Centre at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust:
  • 20 breast cancer patients using PDA (hand held computer) or Kiosk to access information about tests carried out at the Rapid Diagnostic Clinic.

  • 25 breast cancer patients at various stages of their journey using desktop machines to access mihealth.

  • 120 breast cancer patients invited to use desktop computers to access information about tests carried out at the Rapid Diagnostic Clinic before they attend the clinic.
