Engaging patients in their healthcare to improve health literacy
Two separate pilot studies have been carried out working with NHS patients and health
professionals at Royal Liverpool Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Liverpool NHS pilots
The first of a series of pilots was carried out with breast cancer patients at the Linda McCartney Centre at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust:- A care pathway for breast cancer was created using information provided by the Linda McCartney Centre that was structured around their breast care pathway.
- 20 breast cancer patients using PDA (hand held computer) or Kiosk to access information about tests carried out at the Rapid Diagnostic Clinic.
- 25 breast cancer patients at various stages of their journey using desktop machines to access mihealth.
- 120 breast cancer patients invited to use desktop computers to access information about tests carried out at the Rapid Diagnostic Clinic before they attend the clinic.
Newcastle NHS pilot
A second study of of mihealth was carried out with NHS breast cancer patients at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle working with Clive Griffith, Clinical Lead for Breast Cancer and Knowledge Management.-
30+ breast cancer patients at various stages of their journey used desktop machines to access mihealth.
- A generic care pathway for breast cancer was created using Cancerbackup information structured around the Cancer Services Collaborative breast pathway.
- Generic information was further tailored to support local NHS patient needs by the inclusion of relevant local information.
