Health Literacy is a key component of the Department of Health (England's) Health Inequalities Strategy.
Increasing health literacy enables people to participate fully in
their own healthcare decisions and to support them in making choices
to lead a healthy life.
mihealth has been
showcased by the Picker
Institute Europe as a service successful in enabling patients to increase
their health literacy.
Inspiration
mihealth online originated as the inspiration of Jane Wood after her diagnosis of breast cancer in August 2000.
The system was developed at Liverpool John Moores University
(LJMU) where Jane worked exploring the
application of new technologies in educational contexts.
The video, introduced by Jane,
includes interviews with
Michael Mair, Health Researcher and Clive Griffith, Breast Surgeon
who uses mihealth with his patients at the Royal Victoria Infirmary
in Newcastle.
National, local and personal information support
Our services are
easy to tailor for local use
and connect patients to the healthcare services they rely upon.
We provide
high quality information
that is immediately relevant to the person who accesses it by offering both
generic and local information about their condition, the people who will be looking after them
and
further support they may need to help them get on with their
life.
Local cancer portals
We work with local cancer units to provide
cancer information portals for people
attending their hospital for screening or tests and investigations. These
portals offer information support and enable patients to know what to expect
during their visit and provide valuable reassurance at time that can be filled
with great uncertainty.
Personal healthcare organiser
The
personal organiser gives patients access to high quality health
information and
a range of tools designed to help them plan and manage their
care effectively and to give them more control over their health and well being.
mihealth services
We offer a
range of products and services to help
healthcare providers get the most
out of our products and keep them in touch with their patients to enable them to continually
provide
high quality care.
User Centred Design
Our services have been developed in collaboration with
patients and healthcare professionals and our
user centred design
process continues to ensure that our services meet the needs of our users.
Independent evaluation
mihealth online has been designed with the help of patients and Liverpool University have carried
out two
independent evaluations and the system has been shown to
improve
the patient experience.
